DSHobro 0.2 in time for competition

Good progress has been made on version 0.2, I've just finished the first beta version.
The major changes in this version are:
  • A real user-interface, thanks to Mollusk!
  • Scrolling is now supported (so you can read more than just the top of a page)
  • There are 2 views, one for each screen: a miniature one; and a large one on which text is perfectly readable. You can switch views (switch screens) using the L/R triggers, zoom out on the miniature view, click somewhere on the miniature to view the 1:1 version on the other screen, etc...
  • Many options available: a better control over the image compression, enable/disable images, etc.
  • Multi-user support (multiple DS's may use DSHobro at the same time, with 1 server)
  • Privacy (people using the computer can't see what you're doing with the DS)
... and more good stuff that you will hopefully enjoy when you try it!

Version 0.2 *final* will be published for the Dev-Fr Competition.
I will not add anything else in this version because we've already reached the state of beta version.

DSHobro development continues

Although I lost all my data in a hard disk crash (click here for the full story) I had sent an old version of the sources to Mollusk so I will be able to resume the development of DShobro, starting today. I would also appreciate it if you stopped sending me private messages to ask me about the progress of the browser, bear in mind I am doing this project for free and with my spare time so I do not owe anything to you, I will take all necessary time to finish it. Also, I don't read my blog comments anymore, there are just so many of them these days...
BRB, reinstalling devkitpro ...

Update...

People keep emailing me so I think I need to post an update!

First, let me tell you that the past few days have been very busy for me. It's the end of year here and I've had to terminate many different projects for uni. This is the reason why I haven't been able to keep up with the delays I announced. This project is not dead, we're not pulling "another gnirfleo" and I'm sure you know it.

Another problem I wanted to raise. Lately, I've been working on the download speeds. On LAN (at home only, when data doesn't travel on the internet), the download speeds from PC to DS are correct, fast enough for the application. However, using WAN (internet) the speeds are quite terrible. I get something like  8 kilobytes/s. I've written several different protocols and algorithms, with acknowledgements or not (acknowledging every data block, acknowledging 1 data block only, etc...) and I still get the same crappy speed. I've contacted the author of DSFTP, but he didn't reply to my email.
So, I'm facing a choice here: I'm either going to wait until I solve the speed issues, or release a v0.2 that will only be efficient for local usage.

If you have any lead on how to solve the speed issues, please post a comment.
Thanks!

PS: I apologize for the delays, and for not being able to keep up with the delays I originally announced. I hope to make that up with an interesting v0.2 release.

DSHobro 0.2 due soon

Mollusk has finished designing the interface and has left me with a prototype to implement (a few functions I'll need to write).
I will develop these functions in parallel with implementing the rest of the server, and DShobro v0.2 will be ready.
I'll be working on it this week and perhaps version 0.2 will released this week end (although with the awesome weather here in Oxford I might not feel like staying at home stuck on my PC!)

Server complete

The new server for DSHobro v0.2 is (well... almost) complete.
It features:
- support for multiple connections
- improved download speed
- privacy (browser windows aren't visible, but communications aren't encrypted yet)

It's not compatible with the older version of DSHobro.
We're still working on v0.2. Stay tuned.

Still working

Mollusk and I are working on DSHobro 0.2, but it's taking a while since we're trying to come up with something much more interesting than 0.1 alpha.
I'm working on the server more particularly, had to start from scratch.

Happy Easter!

A new video

Thanks to Verocity (member @ GBAtemp.net) we now have a new video of DSHobro.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKQt3WvpTKI

The website on the video loads rather slowly but it depends on the user's DSL speed; the page needs to be fully loaded on the user's PC before it's sent to the DS.

Also, I am considering releasing a new version before I begin the big project.

Don't use 100% image quality

When starting the PC application you're prompted for the server port and image quality (which is actually a JPG compression rate).
Don't use "100" or more, because it'll generate a buggy image and the transfer will also be slower.

Thanks

New video: DSHobro 0.1a

Before downloading DSHobro (read article below) you may want to view this new video of DSHobro 0.1 alpha.

Special  " "  to my friends over at Gnirfleo who started a blog 6 months ago and so far haven't released a single file. Keep up the good work guys!

DSHobro's first public release

I've compiled an alpha version of DSHobro. It contains both the PC server application, and the DS homebrew client.

So, what's available in this version?

- connection & authentication
- visit any website by entering the URL with the virtual keyboard
- you can clic on the page

See, it's very basic. I haven't implemented scrolling yet, and I also need to make a zoom feature, because for now it's absolutely impossible to read the text See, this is what I like to call a "proof of concept" version. In its current state you won't have any real use for it, but you can still have a little fun and find the thousands of bugs. Yeah, it's not very stable but this is mainly due to the relative lack of reliability of the DS WiFi libraries & wrappers, and more generally the DS WiFi hardware components.

Also, you can use the browser remotely. For example, if you start the server application on your PC, go out and connect to a WiFi hotspot with your DS, you'll still be able to use the browser by connecting to your PC, that is if you know your PC's IP address!

To download DSHobro click here:
http://gbatemp.net/up/DSHobro.zip
<!> Since this ZIP file contains a .exe application, I recommend you do NOT download it unless the file is hosted on GBAtemp.net (my web server). Also, you can check the CRC32 of the .exe file which should be F79A9AA1.

<!> You don't need to DLDI-patch the homebrew. It doesn't need to load or save anything (yay, means it won't corrupt your card).

I will probably not update DSHobro simply because I'm starting a much more interesting project which, as I said before, will include a web browser. I'll let you know more as soon as I'm allowed to!

Costello.
